Becoming a tutor with TopMarks

Do I need a formal teaching qualification to tutor with TopMarks?

No, you don’t!  It is not a pre-requisite that you have a formal teaching qualification.  Tutors are not bound by the constraints of a curriculum but are guided by the needs of their students.

Enthusiasm and the ability to deliver lessons tailored to the needs of your students is far more important.

A knowledge of the UK English curriculum is advantageous, but we provide all your teaching resources, give unfaltering support every step of the way!

At a glance you must be:

  • Be over the age of 18

  • Live in the UK

  • Possess the right to work within the UK

Do I need a DBS check?

Yes, as an employee of TopMarks, you will be required to agree to an enhanced DBS check, which we will pay for.

What needs to go into my profile?

A photo- helps students / parents put a face to a name?

A brief bio, which introduces you to prospective students and parents.  It should be professional but personable too!

It should be a short paragraph and include:

  • a sentence to introduce yourself to students and parents

  • Your background and what you are currently doing

  • Previous tutoring experience, if you have it

  • Your teaching style

You will also need to record a 2-minute (maximum) video bio.  We will help you with this.

Lessons

Do I need a laptop or can I tutor on my iPad / iPhone?

All lessons must be conducted on a laptop, so you must be in possession of one.

What else do I need to deliver lessons?

  • A browser, such as

  • A webcam

  • A microphone

  • A strong internet connection

What does the free 15-minute video chat / trial lesson entail?

A trial lesson is an opportunity for you to meet the student and parents / guardians and get a feel for the teaching style that is appropriate for the student.  It is also an opportunity to answer questions the student and / or parents might have.  Importantly, it might give an insight into the language level of the student, going forward.

TopMarks will pay you for this free lesson.
